See letter below from the Race Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston The VELUX 5 OCEANS would like to extend an invitation to you to join in the spectacle of the start of the second Ocean Sprint from Cape Town on Sunday December 12th. The VELUX 5 OCEANS is the oldest and longest-running solo ocean race in the world, and is visiting Cape Town for the seventh time (previously known as the BOC Challenge and the Around Alone). Known as The Ultimate Solo Challenge, the race is 30,000 nautical miles long, which is split down into five individual legs (www.velux5oceans.com). The fleet have already made the 7,400 nautical mile voyage from La Rochelle in France through the North Atlantic, across the Doldrums and down through the South Atlantic to Cape Town. After several weeks in Cape Town resting and making repairs, the skippers will face the perils of the Indian Ocean as they sprint 7,000 nautical miles to Wellington in New Zealand.
The skippers are racing in Eco 60 yachts, the new class for Open 60s built before 2003. I’m sure you all will appreciate these racing yachts are still incredibly impressive and high performance racing machines. We would love as many of you as possible to join us on the water for the race restart on December 12 to give the skippers the send off they deserve, providing wonderful images for the world’s media.
Following a departure ceremony from the North Wharf in the V&A Waterfront at 11 AM, the race will start in Table Bay at 2 PM.
Each boat that joins us on the water will be given a VELUX 5 OCEANS flag, which can be collected from Yacht Club reception. Further information on exclusion zones, turning marks and start details will be provided ahead of race start. Please contact
